Wolverhampton is a West Midlands, England city, administrative hub, and metropolitan borough. It had a population of 249,470 in the 2011 census. The city people's demonym is ‘Wulfrunian’. Historically part of Staffordshire: the town originally developed as a market town specialising in the woollen trade. It became a major centre of coal mining, steel production, lock making, and automobile and motorcycle manufacturing in the Industrial Revolution. The city's economy is still focused on manufacturing and the service sector, including a strong aerospace industry.
Economy
Traditionally, the steel, iron, automotive, engineering and manufacturing industries dominated the economy of Wolverhampton. Over the years, many of the city's traditional industries have closed or scaled down dramatically.
Education
Wolverhampton University is the city's leading provider of higher education. Currently, the university has over 23,000 students. The main campus of the university is in the centre of the city, with other campuses at Compton, and the nearby towns of Walsall and Telford.
