Teesside is a conurbation including Billingham, Redcar, Stockton-on-Tees and Thornaby near Middlesbrough on the River Tees in North East England. It is a heavy industry hub, although the number of people employed has decreased. Traditional industries mainly steelmaking (British Steel) and chemical manufacture (Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI)), have been primarily replaced by high-tech activities, science development and service sector roles.
Large-scale integrated chemical processing on Teesside
The product dominates the Teesside industry and, in many ways, the Northeast England Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) integrated chemical producers. These companies are based on three large chemical sites in Wilton, Billingham and Seal Sands around the mouth of the River Tees. Such companies make products such as petrochemicals, commodity chemicals, fertilizers and polymers.
The River Tees and Teesport
Teesport is the third-largest port in the United Kingdom, and one of the ten biggest in Western Europe centred on the River Tees. This port handles more than 56 million tonnes of goods per year, mostly in the local petrochemical, chemical and steel processing industries.
