Swansea is a coastal town and county, officially known as the City and County of Swansea in Wales. Swansea situated within the historic county boundaries of Glamorgan and the ancient Welsh commote of Gŵyr on the southwest coast. Swansea is the second-largest city in Wales and the United Kingdom's 25th largest city. Throughout 2014, City and County of Swansea had a population of 241,300, the second-most populous local authority area throughout Wales after Cardiff, according to its local council. During the industrial heyday of the 19th century, Swansea was the central hub of the copper smelting industry.
Education
Swansea University has a campus overlooking Swansea Bay in Singleton Park. Swansea University opened a new Bay Campus in the Swansea area of Jersey Marine in 2015. In 2005, the university was awarded The Times Higher Education Supplement Award for the "best student experience" of the United Kingdom. Swansea University Medical School was ranked third best medical school in the UK in 2017, behind the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
