Sunderland is a town in the middle of the metropolitan borough of Sunderland, in Tyne and Wear, England. Sunderland is 12 miles in north-east of Durham and 10 miles in south-east of Newcastle on Tyne, at the mouth of the Wear River. Traditionally, there were three initial villages on the site of modern-day Sunderland by the river Wear mouth in County Durham. Sunderland grew up as a port where coal and salt trade. Sometimes an individual from Sunderland is called a Mackem. Nevertheless, since this term emerged as recently as the early 1980s, it is not universal for Sunderland residents to use and embrace it, particularly among older generations.
Education
Sunderland Polytechnic became the University of Sunderland in 1992. It was founded in 1969. The institution currently has over 17,000 students. The University of Sunderland was named England's top university for providing the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) with the best student experience in 2006. Sunderland College is a continuing education institution with five campuses located in Durham Road, Shiney Row, Hylton, Doxford International Business Park and ' Phoenix House ' in the city centre.
