Leeds is a city located in the county of West Yorkshire in Northern England, UK and it is approximately at 170 miles north of central London. Leeds has one of the most diverse economies of all the employment job centres in the UK and has seen the fastest rate of growth for jobs in the private sector in any UK city. Leeds is the cultural, financial and commercial centre of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. Leeds was a small manor town in the 13th century and became a major centre for wool production and trade in the 17th and 18th centuries and a major mill town in the Industrial Revolution; wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing and other industries were also important.
Education
The University of Leeds, which gained its charter in 1904 having developed from the Yorkshire College which was founded in 1874 and the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831. Leeds Beckett University, previously Leeds Polytechnic, which became a university as Leeds Metropolitan University in 1992 and can trace its origins to the 1824 Mechanics Institute. There are about 31,000 students at the University of Leeds.
