Exeter is one of the cathedral cities located on the River Exe. It has a population of 130,428. It lies 36 miles northeast of Plymouth. During the middle ages, Exeter became a religious centre. During the 16th century, Exeter cathedral, which was founded in the middle of the eleventh century, became Anglican.
The city was rebuilt after the second world war and it is the main centre for tourism.
Transport
Bus: The main hub for local buses are in High street. All the express services are operated from here. The stage coach operates the country bus services and these services are run from most places in East and North Devon.
Railway: This is considered the main rail hub because it is linked to many branches in Devon within the south west. Exeter has three main railway stations namely, Exeter St David’s, Exeter St Thomas and Exeter Central. The major interchange station is Exeter St Davids and it is served by all services, while Exeter central is served by local services and lastly, the western side of the city is served by Exeter St Thomas.
