Dundee is the fourth-largest city in Scotland and the 51st most built-up town in the UK. In 2016, the mid-year population estimate was 148,270. Currently, Dundee is promoted as "One City Many Discoveries" in honour of the history of scientific activities and of the RRS Discovery, Robert Falcon Scott's Antarctic exploration vessel, which was founded in Dundee and is now at Discovery Point.

Education
After 70 years at the University of St Andrews, the University of Dundee became an independent entity in 1967. It was established as University College, Dundee, in 1881 by Mary Ann Baxter and her distant cousin John Boyd Baxter. The University now contains the Dundee Law School, which is housed in the Scrymgeour building on the main campus and the School of Medicine, based at the city's Ninewells Hospital. The university also includes the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and the college of teacher training.
