Colchester is a historic market town in the county of Essex and the largest settlement within Colchester Borough. Colchester was Britain's first Roman-founded settlement, and Colchester claims to be the oldest recorded city in Britain. Located on the Colne River, Colchester is located 50 miles in London's northeast and is connected to the capital by the A12 road and the Great Eastern Main Line railway station. It is considered a famous commuting town, less than 30 miles (48 km) from London Stansted Airport and 20 miles (32 km) from Harwich's passenger ferry port.
