Chelmsford is the largest settlement in eastern England's Chelmsford district and Essex county town. It is situated in the London commuter belt, about 30 miles (48 km) north-east of London's notional centre at Charing Cross, and about 35 km (22 miles) from Colchester. Chelmsford is a major city with about 80,000 workers. There are three shopping centres of medium size, High Chelmer, Bond Street and The Meadows.
