Cambridge is a university town and county town of Cambridgeshire, England, some 50 miles north of London on the River Cam. The population at the 2011 United Kingdom Census was 123,867, including 24,506 students. During the Roman and Viking ages, Cambridge became an important trading hub, and there is evidence of settlement in the region as early as the Bronze Age. Cambridge is at the center of Silicon Fen's high-tech industry with sectors such as engineering and bioscience and several university-born start-ups. More than 40% of the population has a credential for higher education, more than double the national average.

State provision includes Hills Road Sixth Form College, Long Road Sixth Form College and Cambridge City College in the further education sector. All public and independent schools educate pupils from nursery to high school age in Cambridge. Cambridgeshire County Council administers state schools, which has a total of 251 schools, 35 of them in Cambridge City.
