Bournemouth is a seaside resort town on England's southern coast. It is located in east of the 155 km Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The city had a population of 183,491 at the 2011 census, making it the largest in Dorset's administrative county. When Lewis Tregonwell built it in 1810, it was a deserted heathland often used by fishermen and smugglers. The town received a boost when it was first marketed as a health resort when it appeared in Augustus Granville's book of 1841, The Spas of England. With the arrival of the railway, Bournemouth's growth increased, and it became a town in 1870.
Education
Bournemouth has two universities: Bournemouth University and Arts University Bournemouth, both are located in the nearby Poole. They are also home to AECC University College (formally known as the Anglo European College of Chiropractic) situated on Bournemouth's Parkwood Road. Bournemouth is one of the minorities of England's local authorities with two grammar schools (one for boys, one for girls) and ten modern/comprehensive secondary schools.
